Learn to draw on your phone.

An interactive, guided experience that teaches beginning students the fundamentals of drawing from observation.

I wish I could draw.
— Most People

Learning to draw is one of those things everyone wishes they could do. The only available options are to take classes, watch videos, or use workbooks. For most, committing to an in-person class is too expensive and time consuming. Videos and workbooks is valuable but are missing the most important element–feedback. There is a huge opportunity for someone to create an interactive drawing education app for students to use in the comfort of their own homes on their own schedule.

As someone who spent years learning to draw, I know the frustration. I spent years taking drawing classes and drawing into the late hours of the night because it is something I love doing. I took my experiences learning, met with drawing instructors and artists, and created a beginners curriculum that I believe would have worked for me when I was just starting out. I tested this curriculum by printing out work packets and holding free in-person workshops for anyone who wanted to learn to draw (Check out the PDF). I felt confident this approach had potential and started designing a mobile app that attempted to gamify the education and exercises.

Step by step instruction that translates to pencil and paper.

We are well aware of challenge and limitations of teaching to draw through a smartphone. We chose an approach of teaching concepts that can be recreated outside of the app. In this case, the skull has pretty consistent proportions. If you can draw a circle, you can use a formula to draw a proportional human skull. If you practice this enough times, you will become better at drawing (a skull).

A simple interface with live interactive feedback.

A drawing is broken down into simple steps. The student is given immediate feed back if their mark was accurate or not via an overlay on the instruction screen (top).

INSTRUCTION AND FEEDBACK CONCEPTS

Like following IKEA instructions but with interactive feedback!
